Dblar

Status: Alive Role: First mate turned shopkeeper, The Glyph Pool — and, as of very recently, apparently a Surgebinder. Nobody saw this coming. Dblar himself seems the most surprised of anyone.

Overview

A pirate whose incompetence is so consistent it’s basically a magic system of its own — and somehow the party loves him for it. He’s been along since the day they first stole a boat, has a pet hog named Dog, once crashed a ship directly into a smuggling operation (an outcome so lucky it earned the party an actual Letter of Marque from the Thaylen Navy), and — against every odd the table could generate — landed the killing blow on the Yu-Nerig by throwing a rapier at it. Nobody, least of all Dblar, has fully explained how any of that worked.

The Glyph Pool has since had a glow-up, and so has Dblar. He now greets customers in an outfit so aggressively bright the party has independently compared him to a lit lightbulb and, separately, to a large pile of stacked spheres — a comparison Dblar took as a compliment (“you’re saying I look like money — this is great”). He’s hired an assistant, Bitsy, to measure customers for clothes (Mel immediately tried to pickpocket her; it worked, seven marks). And business has diversified into “Yip” merchandise: small devotional statues of all ten Heralds-as-spren, plus, grimly, a Kael statue, which apparently sold extremely well — Dblar mentioned making “a lot of money” off it, seemingly without registering that the man being merchandised used to buy his drinks. This wiki has chosen not to think about that too hard either.

And then there’s the flying. Mid-firefight, with a friend in danger, Dblar just… floated ten feet into the air on a Gravitation surge, offering the explanation “well, listen, last time you came back, I realized I could do this.” No ceremony, no oaths, no visible spren. He can now also — with mixed success — use Division. This wiki does not know what Dblar is. This wiki is fairly sure Dblar doesn’t either.

Key Moments

  • Earned the Thaylen Navy’s Letter of Marque off the back of his smuggler skirmish. Nucko stole it at some point, because obviously he did, then gave it back — professional courtesy among people who steal things for a living.
  • Runs the front counter of the party’s own storefront now, The Glyph Pool (Shop) — pirate to proprietor, a career pivot nobody saw coming.
  • Adopted an unhatched egg after a chicken-buying trip went sideways in a way only Dblar’s trips ever do. Ravan is currently on incubation duty.

The Glyph Pool’s Rebrand

  • Debuted a new signature look loud enough that Mel compared him, unprompted, to both a lightbulb and a stack of spheres. Dblar heard only the second half and has been insufferable about it since.
  • Hired Bitsy as shop help/tailor. Within minutes of meeting her, Mel had already lifted seven marks off her — a level of institutional theft The Glyph Pool seems constitutionally unable to prevent, even from its own staff.
  • Now stocks Yip statues covering all ten Heralds, plus a statue of Kael. It sold. Dblar was thrilled about the money. This wiki has elected not to ask him how he feels about it now that he’s had time to think.
  • On the subject of pigs, informed a prospective customer that buying statues and shoes “will make my pigs very happy” — establishing that he already had more than one hog well before this wiki caught up with the accounting. See below.

Surprise! A Surgebinder

  • Realized, apparently for the first time, that he could use Gravitation to fly — floating up mid-combat with all the ceremony of a man discovering he’d left the stove on. Ravan’s reaction was to inform him that he was now Ravan’s squire. Dblar disagreed.
  • Later in the same running battle, attempted Division for the first time to help break a captured Gavlin out of a Carapace cocoon — sparks sputtered uselessly from his fingers, the roll failed, and he spent the rest of the turn screaming at the nearest enemy about his dead pig (see below). Tried again before the fight ended and actually pulled it off, disintegrating the Carapace wall clean through. Two attempts, same day, wildly different results. This wiki has no idea how many surges this man has.
  • Closing verdict from the table, roughly verbatim: “Dublar can fly now” — followed immediately by Dblar challenging Keth to a flying race. The race has not yet happened. This wiki will update this page the moment it does.

The Hog Accounting

  • Sometime prior to the Odium/Ervel ambush, the original hog — Dog, purchased for him by Nucko — was lost, off-page and unmourned by this wiki, since nobody told us until after the fact. By the time of the ambush, Dblar had already replaced him and then some: three hogs, no explanation offered or requested.
  • During the ambush itself, one of the three was burned to a crisp — restrained alongside Dblar in a dust-and-vine trap that Torin’s own fire-based Division work then obligingly set alight. Technically an enemy’s turn. Functionally friendly fire. The DM’s exact framing: “ironically, it was fire that did burn this pig to a crisp.” Dblar was, per the record, “not gonna be happy here.” He was not.
  • Current hog census: two. Grudge against Torrin’s Division surge: ongoing.

Relationships

  • Bitsy — shop assistant, tailor, and first documented victim of Mel’s opportunistic pickpocketing in this new storefront era.
  • Kael (deceased) — now a novelty statue in Dblar’s shop, which sold well. Dblar seems unaware, or unbothered, or possibly both.
  • Ravan — self-appointed… something, regarding the flying. Still on egg-incubation duty on Dblar’s behalf, which suggests the relationship runs both ways.
  • Keth — recipient of a standing, unresolved challenge to a flying race.
  • Torin — inadvertently responsible for the death of one of Dblar’s three hogs, whether or not either of them has fully processed that yet.
