Theren
Also known as: Theron, “Gwap” (heist alias) Status: Deceased — died in the battle before the party’s arrival in New Natan; body recovered and Soulcast to stone Affiliation: Highprince Valam’s army (Captain General, battalion commander); formerly The Ghostbloods (double agent, revealed posthumously) Spren: Geoffrey (bond broken before death, when Theren fully embraced the Thrill) Family: Father (murdered by Marren), younger brother Torin
Overview
Every wiki needs at least one entry that starts with “he threw a knife across a dungeon room with such casual precision that we knew immediately he was going to be a problem,” and this is that entry. Theren was a duelist, a firebug, a fugitive, a battalion commander, a secretly-fully-initiated Ghostblood operative, and eventually a Thrill Champion who broke his own spren-bond rather than put the anger down — and he managed to cram every single one of those identities into a campaign arc that ended before the rest of the party even reached New Natan. He is also, as it turns out, the answer to “who was Nucko’s partner this whole time,” which is a sentence that reads very differently once you already know how his story ends.
Officially: disgraced son of a family branded traitors to the Veden Crown, who clawed his way from wanted fugitive to recognized heir to battalion commander in the space of a few in-game weeks. Unofficially: a Ghostblood double agent for over two decades who spent that same stretch quietly redirecting the party toward his own organization’s goals, and never once got caught doing it — because he died before anyone thought to ask.
Origin
Theren’s father was murdered by Marren, a rival brightlord who then stole the family’s ancestral Shardblade and, for good measure, engineered the entire family’s downfall — Theren’s household was branded traitors to the Veden Crown, complete with a hefty bounty on Theren’s own head, sometime while he was off adventuring with people who didn’t yet know any of this about him. When the news finally reached him, he took it with the emotional range of a man reading a grocery list: “eh, I hated him anyway,” then he asked the table for a hood and got back to being a fugitive. Whatever grief was actually underneath that response, Theren kept it to himself for the rest of his (relatively short) life — right up until the moment, much later, when a stolen Shardblade forced the question back to the surface with considerably less composure.
What nobody at the table knew for the first several months of the campaign — Theren included, one assumes, or perhaps not, given how the reveal eventually landed — was that “disgraced duelist with a taste for arson” was also cover. Theren had been a fully initiated Ghostblood for over 25 years, Nucko’s actual operative partner the entire time. That fact does not appear anywhere in this Origin section while Theren was alive to read it. See Key Moments below.
Key Moments
Session One: A Duelist Is Born
- In the party’s very first fight — a paralytic-drugged prison break against knife-and-crossbow cultist priests — Theren strolled over to the stacked equipment mid-combat and threw Nucko’s own knife across the room with enough accuracy that Nucko caught it clean out of the air and drove it through a priest’s throat. First thing the table ever learned about Theren: showoff, and correct to be one.
- Noticed the strange spren trailing Kael around before Kael himself had any idea what it was — Theren clocked a Radiant bond forming in real time, purely by paying more attention than anyone else in the room.
- Swore the First Ideal of the Knights Radiant defending Handsy (Kael’s dog) from Shai, the black-robed priestess of a cult chanting “life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination” over an altar deep in the same dungeon. Shai tore her own feet free of the stone that had pinned her and fled the fight rather than finish it — an early, useful lesson that not everything Theren swore an Ideal at would have the decency to stick around and lose properly.
The Gwap Years: Crime, Mostly Arson-Adjacent
- Under the alias “Gwap,” partnered with Nucko (posing as “Jaro Guap”) to case the Kharbranth Button Museum — disguised via Illumination as a Vedenar muffin baker, of all things, for the reconnaissance pass.
- Returned for the actual heist and helped drain all five museum alarm fabrials dry while Nucko soulcast the display dome over Jezrien’s coat into water. Between them they walked out with the Button of Jezrien, an entire Herald’s-daughter’s gown, and roughly 5,000 marks in historical buttons.
- Tested his Division Surge for the very first time by setting the entire Button Museum on fire on the way out the door, purely because he wanted to see what it did. It did that.
- Forced the museum guard escorting Lia to drink a cup of spiked wine — by hand, once persuasion stopped being an option — to keep him from raising an alarm while Nucko kept the Ardent herself occupied with an entirely different kind of distraction.
- Bluffed his way into the Thaylen Conclave library as a “Grout Inspector” performing structural checks, with Kael playing along as his structural engineer. When keeping his own cover meant the desk clerk, Irval, couldn’t be allowed to notice her missing keys, Theren used Abrasion to make the floor slip out from under her — she hit her head hard enough to bleed, and a visibly rattled Theren stabilized her himself with a top-tier Medicine check before finishing the job anyway.
- Extorted a nineteen-year-old girl for payment in exchange for freeing her captured father, alongside Nucko. She stabbed Nucko for his trouble; Ravan pulled the knife back out. Filed, somehow, under “downtime.”
The Ghost in the Story
- Followed Nucko’s lead into a dark Vedenar alley on assignment to assassinate Jasnah Kholin — before either of them could act, Jasnah casually transformed three attacking thugs into flame, stone, and crystal respectively and walked away without a backward glance. The mission ended not in failure exactly, but in the sudden, overwhelming realization that the target was wildly out of their weight class.
- Revealed, months after his death, to have been a fully initiated Ghostblood double agent for over 25 years — Nucko’s actual operative partner the entire time, not merely his friend. Nearly every early-campaign detour, it turned out, had been engineered by the two of them together: the stolen-boat escape that redirected the party toward Kharbranth instead of Dumadari, the Button Museum fire (staged specifically to lift ancient Voidbringer-hunting spores off a Herald’s jacket), even the tracking of Handsy’s axehound pups, which was a targeted Ghostblood breeding acquisition the whole time. Theren never lived to see any of it land at the table.
Family Business
- Confronted Marren — boyhood rival and his father’s actual killer — on the Vedenar docks. Marren summoned a Shardblade Theren instantly recognized as his father’s own and taunted him with it, right up until Nucko (Illumination-disguised as Theren’s dead father’s face) sent Marren fleeing the docks screaming “NO! NO NO NO! I killed you, you can’t be alive!”
- Wore a disguise so fashionable — courtesy of Gavlin’s Artifabrian talents — that it drew considerably more attention to a wanted fugitive than simply not wearing a disguise would have.
- Attempted to sneak into a hostile city with Jaro riding piggyback as cover. Jaro ran face-first into a signpost. Kael saved the entire party from summary execution with a Nat 20 Deception check, declaring Jaro was simply his “very sick grandfather.”
- Infiltrated King Taravangian’s palace alongside Ravan, playing politics with the king directly right up until their cover blew. With the exits sealed, Theren skated past a fully armored shardbearer, saluted him on the way by, and grappled the king himself in one smooth, graceful motion — only to lose his grip on an old man before the shardbearer, Graves, tackled him to end the session. Official campaign record: “Theren Defeats a Shardbearer.” Unofficial campaign record: “he got punted through a hole in the floor and ran away.” Both, somehow, are true.
The General
- Recognized by Highprince Valam as his father’s surviving heir and handed command of his own battalion — a remarkable career upgrade for a man who’d been a wanted fugitive with a bounty on his head only a couple of sessions earlier.
- Commissioned Nucko and Kael as Sergeants, assigned Ravan to work alongside Nucko, and pulled Gavlin into the command tent with him, then personally led the breach through Vedenar’s walls once the party’s soulcaster turned a section of stone to smoke.
- Whipped up a battlefield dust storm mid-fight and later tore enemy lines apart blasting fireballs straight from his hands with Division while pushing deeper into his own home country.
- When a Thrill-fueled brawl left ten of Kael’s soldiers dead and Kael in the stocks for it, Theren’s official response was “MORE MF’ING VIOLENCE” — he had volunteers line up to fight Kael as his punishment and wiped the floor with every last one of them.
★ How a Knight Radiant Becomes a Thrill Champion
This is the arc that actually defines Theren, so it gets the full walkthrough.
It starts with a stolen Shardblade. Brightlord Merren Vethar — a rival, not to be confused with Marren the murderer, because the campaign apparently required two — joined an enemy battle with his own Shardblade to try to turn the tide. Kael sinkholed him; Theren and Kael did serious damage; and, almost unbelievably, it was Tink who landed the actual killing blow, still convinced the entire time that he was slaying the legendary “Chungledown Bimm.” Tink slit Merren’s throat and claimed the shardblade for himself — the very blade Marren had stolen from Theren’s murdered father, now in the hands of a stowaway who thought he was fighting a completely different person.
Theren, already deep in the grip of the Thrill by that point, did not process this rationally. He killed Tink on the spot to reclaim the blade — while Kael, Gavlin, and Ravan all actively tried to stop him — and took his father’s Shardblade back over Tink’s body.
His bond with Geoffrey had already been fraying under the Thrill’s pull before this. What came next made it worse. In the battle immediately following, Theren fully gave himself over to it: burning through enemy soldiers with the reclaimed blade, growing more dangerous with every kill. Kael tried to talk him down mid-fight; Theren turned and attacked Kael instead. Ravan finally threw Theren onto a rooftop with Gravitation, and Kael and Gavlin followed him up for one last intervention. None of the arguments worked. Geoffrey begged him, directly, to stop.
Theren drank in more of the Thrill anyway, severed the bond with his own spren on purpose, and let the Thrill rush in to fill the space where Geoffrey had been. He ended that session a fully bonded Thrill Champion — a Knight Radiant who broke his own Ideal from the inside, by choice, in front of the people who loved him and were actively begging him not to.
Taps: The End of Captain Theren
- Died in the climactic battle before the party even reached New Natan. The scene that opened the next session was nothing but “destruction and carnage” — Nucko found standing over Theren’s body, holding his reclaimed Shardblade, absorbing whatever a Shardblade does when its bearer dies.
- The party met Torin, Theren’s previously-unmentioned younger brother, that same night. Nucko offered him the family Shardblade outright; Torin initially refused it, calling it a symbol of his family’s corruption, before accepting it to keep it out of worse hands. Kael, unconvinced a total stranger deserved a priceless weapon, threatened to end Torin himself if he ever abused it. Torin agreed to the terms.
- General Thrinity gave the party a full week to mourn before asking them to formally commit to Valam’s cause. That night, the party sat around a fire and traded their favorite memories of Theren.
- Days later, his body turned up aboard Sebarial’s ship — brought aboard entirely by accident during an unrelated crisis. The party gathered on deck for a real goodbye; Nucko and Torin had a quiet moment with the body, and Torin said the only thing that mattered: “I’ll remember you as the good brother you were when I was a kid.”
- Soulcast into stone on the spot — no roll required, for once in this campaign’s history — and formally, ridiculously, permanently titled Captain General High Prince Doctor Knight Radiant Captain Theron. The statue was moved to the Wind’s Favor for safekeeping until a proper burial could happen.
Relationships
- Nucko — Ghostblood partner, closest friend, and, unbeknownst to the rest of the party for most of the campaign, his actual co-conspirator on a 25-year joint operation. Left holding both of their blades when Theren died.
- Torin — the younger brother Theren never once mentioned to the party, who arrived the very night Theren died and inherited both his sword and his cause.
- Marren — boyhood rival and his father’s murderer, who fled the Vedenar docks screaming rather than face what he thought was Theren’s father risen from the dead.
- Brightlord Merren Vethar — a separate rival entirely, killed in battle by Tink; the resulting theft of the family Shardblade is what pushed Theren over the edge into killing Tink himself.
- Geoffrey — his spren, who begged him not to sever their bond during the siege of Vedenar. Theren did it anyway, and became the Thrill Champion in the same breath.
- Kael — fellow battlefield commander who tried, and failed, twice: once to talk Theren down from the Thrill on a rooftop, and once to keep Tink alive from Theren’s rage.
- Highprince Valam — recognized Theren as his father’s surviving heir and handed him a battalion to command.
